Background of the Study
E-library authentication systems are critical to safeguarding digital resources and ensuring that access is restricted to authorized users. At Federal Polytechnic, Ede, these systems serve not only as a security measure but also as a gateway to personalized academic experiences. Effective authentication processes are designed to balance stringent security protocols with ease of access, thereby enhancing user trust and engagement (Ibrahim, 2023). Students’ perceptions of these systems play a significant role in their overall satisfaction with digital library services. In recent years, the growing reliance on digital platforms has led to the integration of biometric, two-factor, and single sign-on methods, each with its own benefits and challenges. This study investigates how students view the reliability, usability, and effectiveness of current e-library authentication systems. The research examines issues such as login difficulties, security concerns, and the speed and reliability of authentication processes. In doing so, it seeks to uncover whether the systems in place effectively support secure and seamless access or if they inadvertently hinder the learning experience by imposing cumbersome verification steps (Okafor, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Students have expressed dissatisfaction with the current e-library authentication systems at Federal Polytechnic, Ede due to issues like prolonged login times, frequent password resets, and occasional security lapses (Ibrahim, 2023). These problems not only disrupt access to essential academic resources but also lead to frustration and reduced utilization of digital services. Moreover, the absence of a streamlined, user-friendly authentication process has resulted in a negative perception among the student body regarding digital security protocols. The gap between security needs and user convenience is problematic, as overly complex systems can deter usage while weak systems can compromise data integrity (Okafor, 2024). This study aims to identify and address these challenges by evaluating user perceptions to inform improvements in authentication processes.
Objectives of the Study:
To assess student satisfaction with the current authentication systems.
To identify the challenges and limitations of existing e-library login protocols.
To propose solutions for enhancing both security and usability.
Research Questions:
How do students perceive the effectiveness of current authentication methods?
What specific challenges do students encounter during authentication?
What improvements can balance security with user convenience?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it addresses the critical need for secure, efficient access to digital library services through improved authentication systems. Enhanced processes will promote user trust and improve overall library engagement. The findings will guide technical improvements and policy adjustments, ensuring that security measures do not adversely affect user experience. By resolving these challenges, the study contributes to a more secure and user-friendly digital academic environment (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study focuses solely on students’ perceptions of e-library authentication systems at Federal Polytechnic, Ede, and does not examine other digital security measures.
Definitions of Terms:
Authentication System: A digital mechanism used to verify the identity of users.
E-library: A digital repository providing academic resources.
User Perception: The users’ opinions and attitudes toward a system’s usability and security.
